Description
Introduced to shadow theatre by the renowned puppeteer Mollas, Morfonios derives from Bebe Rui of Turkish Karagöz. As his name suggests, he considers himself handsome, fashionable and irresistible, although his behaviour reveals a superficial education and few interests. He is short, with an enormous head and a distinctive large nose. Unaware of his unusual appearance, he believes himself beautiful and mocks others as ugly. His drawn-out, strongly nasal voice ends each phrase with a characteristic 'ouits', provoking laughter. Pampered and perpetually lovesick, he satirises the pretentious, self-styled intellectual.
